... is generally referred to in the New Testament by that name, but John 6:1 refers to "the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias".
Tiberias is a city on the shores of the Sea, which was established around 20 AD (CE). Wikipedia states that the name 'Sea of Tiberias' was first used in the late 1st century AD (CE). It also tells us that the modern Hebrew name is the Lake or Sea of Kinneret, which comes from the Hebrew Bible (the main source of the Christian Old Testament).
Bing Maps refers to it as Lake Tiberias; the Times Complete Atlas of the World (11th edition 2009, reprinted with changes 2011) calls it the Sea of Galilee.
